Civil Rights

An Act restoring enforcement of civil rights – S.846

This bill restores the right of an individual to bring a claim where a governmental policy or activity has the effect of unlawfully discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin or sex. The bill allows an aggrieved person to challenge such a policy or activity in state court.

An Act protecting civil rights – S.1308

This bill would prohibit any state resources, including law enforcement agencies, the RMV, or any political subdivision, from sharing information with the federal government for the purposes of creating a registry based on religion, nationality, national origin, citizenship, ethnicity, race, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, or age.

An Act to protect the civil rights and safety of all Massachusetts residents (The Safe Communities Act) – S.1305

This bill would prohibit state collaboration with the federal government for the purposes of creating a Muslim registry, and ensure that state resources are not used to enforce federal immigration law. This bill is an expansion of the Trust Act, which I filed last session.

An Act granting equal access to original birth certificates to all persons born in Massachusetts – S.1195

This bill increases the number of adopted persons who can access the information on their initial birth certificate and receive a copy of the birth certificate upon request.
