Senator Eldridge and Representative Donaghue Announce Over $26,000 in Renewable Energy Grants for Southborough Schools

Improvements will boost energy efficiency and cut lighting and heating costs

Southborough, MA –  State senator Jamie Eldridge (D-Marlborough) and State Representative Kate Donaghue (D-Southborough) are proud to announce that the Department of Energy Resources (DOER) has awarded $26,395 in grant funding to support energy efficiency projects in Southborough schools.

The funding includes a $13,434 grant for the installation of LED lighting at P. Brent Trottier School. LED lights consume significantly less energy than traditional lighting, lowering the school district’s electricity costs while reducing its carbon footprint. High-quality LED bulbs are also more durable, lasting up to fifty times longer than incandescent bulbs.

Southborough also received a $12,961 grant for weatherization improvements at the Flagg School Building. Weatherization involves a range of strategies to reduce a building’s energy use, including upgrading insulation, improving moisture control, and sealing air leaks. These improvements help maintain indoor temperatures year-round, keeping cold air out in the winter and warm air out in the summer, while lowering heating and cooling costs.

This funding comes from the Green Communities Division’s competitive grant program, administered by the Department of Energy Resources. The Green Communities program supports municipalities in advancing renewable and energy-efficient projects through both funding and technical assistance.

“I’m thrilled the state is supporting the modernization of Southborough’s school buildings,” said State Senator Jamie Eldridge. “I’m grateful to DOER Commissioner Elizabeth Mahoney, Town Administrator Mark Purple, and the Southborough Select Board for their commitment to sustainability. These grants will help Southborough continue to lead on energy efficiency and environmental stewardship in our schools.”

“Thanks to the Southborough School Committee, the Southborough Select Board and Administrator Mark Purple for their efforts towards reducing the carbon footprint and increasing sustainability,” said Representative Kate Donaghue. “These grants from DOER are tangible support from the Commonwealth towards fighting climate change.”
